London is a very big place full of a variety of different cultures. Most times these cultures seem to be represented by tourists especially in central areas of London such as Picadilly Circus and Leicester Square (pronounced LESTER Square). I would suggest that you do visit these places but perhaps only in passing through to other areas. If you want to look at (cheap) souveniers and the like be my guest.
London is the term commonly used to refer to a large area comprised of quite a number of small “buroughs” and even towns. The “City of London” refers to the old part of London also known as the “Square Mile” containing the financial heart of London.
If you are looking for Internet access when in London, there are a large number of Internet Cafe's now available – try Tottenham Court Road (for example) – though rates are a bit expensive (avoid sipping the coffee slowly).
There are other areas within the London area that are worth a visit:
The 'tube', as the underground is affectionatly known, is a well-worn method of quickly getting around the city. Expect it to be fairly grimy (if not dirty) and crowded even during off-peak times. During peak times, it is not a pleasant place to be. Even so, many of the stations are like stepping back in time, like the station at White City.
Despite the many tourist areas that many visitors see, this is a real city with real city problems such as graffiti. I find this particular spot visible on the train coming into the city from Woking amusing since there are obvious signs indicating that graffiti is not allowed yet they still do it. They repaint and a fresh display is visible days later, even more outlandish than the previous. Makes me wonder why they bother.
