Banjul is a small city that cannot grow any more than it already
has since it is essentially an island in the middle of the Gambia
river. It is located on the northernmost tip of the south bank of the
Gambian river where the river meets the ocean on the west coast.

The following are some reviews of the travel books on The Gambia
and what I have thought of them. This is NOT an exhaustive list -- only
the ones I have found to be the best of what is available.

	* [Book Image] Lonely Planet: The Gambia & Senegal - (February 1999) This is the first travel guide I bought for The Gambia and is now hopelessly out of date (the map of the Kombos area is truly painful to behold). The first section of this book is devoted to describing the area of The Gambia/ Se…

Introduction

The Gambia is a small country that stretches on the north and south
side of the Gambia river. The country is on the west coast of Africa
and is surrounded on three sides by Senegal (the other side being the
ocean) and is just north of the equator. There are many big tourist
resorts all along the west coast
but not many tourists travel in to see the real Gambia further
in-country (or “up-country” as it is known) along the river.

Introduction

This journal is of the first few days of my trip to the Gambia with
VSO. For a detailed description as to why I am doing this, please
see here. In a nutshell, I have
decided to take a two-year break from my “normally” scheduled life
and chosen to volunteer with the VSO organisation with their goal
towards promoting sustainable development in developing countries,
in my case the Gambia.

Day One Hundred and Fifty One - Tuesday, June 25th, 2002 - Kanifing

Another typical day here in the Gambia. It is beginning to get very
warm now. Well, it seems that way. The temperature is about the same
as a few months ago but it is now very humid since we are just getting
into the rainy season. We have only had a few days where it has rained
so far but I am told to expect a LOT more. Makes me wonder how often I
should water the plants...

The VSO are very active in the Gambia, providing developmental
support in various sectors including health and education where
their primary focus lies.

[VSO Office in Fajara]

I have a bit of an interest in the work done by VSO here since
I am a volunteer (see here for
why) working with the Department of State for Health in the
Planning Unit in Banjul. My first few weeks involved training and
settling into my new life for the new few years (see
here for my journal of this period).
