Review of 'England Made Me'

England Made Me by Graham Greene

Anthony Farrant is a bit of a drifter – unable to hold any particular job, always “I've resigned” where his sister knows that this is not true. She steps in to find him a job with her employer - Krogh, a Swedish financier. Anthony manages to get Krogh to “loosen up a bit” but Anthony has a bit of a conscience when asked to do something that offends his sence of honour. An interesting mixture of tragedy (the ultimate fate of Anthony) yet tinged with hope (the “opening of Krogh's eyes” to do what he actually wants to do instead of what others expect of him). Of course, being Greene, this is well written but I did find it a bit difficult to get into with none of the main characters any particular “hero” or really even “likeable”.

Rating: “A bit better than average”
