One of the best new asian restaurants in London with square, shared tables the ambiance is simply buzzing and the food is absolutely fantastic (and not overly expensive). The noodle dishes are fantastic, the lemon tea is wonderful and all other dishes simply have to be tried to be believed. A great find.

Review of 'China City (NOW CLOSED)'

Probably one of the better Dim Sum restaurants in ChinaTown, definitely one of the most crowded. It is an unexpected surprise to find China City in it’s own courtyard in a 3-story building in the middle of the busy Leicester Square area, but a welcome one. Serving up an adequate dim sum (trolleys are NOT the norm – order from menu), their dinner is not nearly as good serving up simply typical “western Chinese food”.

Review of 'Melati'

A small restaurant located just north of Piccadilly Circus in the heart of Soho Melati offers a good assortment of Indonesian cuisine (ALWAYS get the coconut rice). I found the service a bit indifferent and the atmosphere a bit spartan (but acceptable). A bit overpriced but a very good dinner out and a good alternative to the fast-food haven that is Piccadilly.

Review of 'Misato'

Located right in the heart of Soho and Leicester Square, this small, busy restaurant is the perfect place for a very good light Japanese meal. Portions are good and the prices are very low. The decor is a bit...drab...but don’t let that put you off. A good selection of lunch specials is available. A much wider range of dishes is provided over the near-by Tokyo Diner (see below), though Misato is not open until midnight.

A very modern interior was a promising sign to my visit for lunch. The dimly lit space had a number of seats around a couple of sushi conveyor belts winding their way around. Each of the dishes was labelled quite clearly on the base with, as expected, different colour labels indicating their cost (even soup was found travelling thus). The miso soup is interesting in that it contained a number of fresh herbs (unusual for miso) but quite tasty. The tea was quite good but t…

Yet another Wagamama-style Japanese eatery with long cafeteria-style tables with diners eating elbow to elbow in rather cramped, but modern, surroundings -- much more crowded than Wagamama (but just as modern). Always crowded Satsuma serves up more traditional Japanese dishes such as sushi in addition to noodles. I found the miso soup quite refreshing and the sushi very nicely prepared. Noodles were fresh and tasty. The price was definitely quite good tho…

Located on a small back-alley in Soho just around the corner from the Swiss building in Leicester Square (towards Piccadilly Circus). A refreshingly small sushi restaurant located just around the corner from Piccadilly Circus with reasonable prices and good food. Help yourself to the tea using the hot water dispenser on the counter and to a place wherever there is one free along the small conveyor. We took advantage of the “Taste of Yauatcha” menu which provides 8 different dim sum items for two people for £28.88, though only between 3 and 6 pm Monday through Friday. Luckily enough we were able to get a reservation for an early Friday dinner before a show in the west end.

A hot new ramen place in London? I am SO there! Oh well.

I had heard of this new New York-style ramen bar (an odd juxtaposition if I have ever heard) in the heart of the restaurant scene of Soho just off of Wardour Street.
Review of 'Inko Nito'

A few weeks ago at Carnaby Street Eat Food Festival we noticed a new, intriguing, addition to the local restaurant scene: Inko Nito. Peering through the floor-to-ceiling windows we saw a cool, clean, quite industrial interior with narrow tables arranged around a central barbecuing area on which small skewers of delights were arranged. Having a look at the menu we saw that it specialised in small izakaya-style Japanese food dishes

I am not entirely sure I like going out for steak any longer which suggests perhaps I have moved on from my days living in Canada where this would be the height of fine dining. Now I find it all a bit boring. Sure, there is something satisfying in having a large slice of beef on the plate in front of you but I am now looking for something showing a bit more, perhaps something demonstrating that the chef is able to do something more than put a hunk of beef (sure, high…

Shack Fuyu serves “Yōshoku” (Western-inspired Japanese dishes), I would call it an izakaya (informal Japanese pub), from the ramen chain Bone Daddies. When we visited at about 7 pm on a Wednesday evening the small restaurant was packed leaving us sitting at the lively bar tucked in as close as possible to allow people to pass behind us.

Review of 'Cookhouse Joe'

Supposedly “the best chicken in London” but, sorry to say, we left disappointed. Visiting with four people on a Thursday (early) evening we were put in the dimly lit upstairs (up quite a narrow, dirty, staircase) where they had seated most groups. The ground floor has a bar on the left, with tables and the rotisserie cooking the chickens at the back. Arriving before our two additional companions we attempted to read the dark menus without any light, resorting to …

A personal favourite

Back in the summer we visited the Carnaby Street Eat Food Festival where we were bowled away by the kebabs of “Le Bab” but I have heard for some time how excellent the food was. So did the food live up to the hype? Well, yes, it did indeed!

When we visited the Carnaby Street Eat Food Festival last August we could not help but notice the longest queues were for the unusually named “Ugly Dumpling”. We ended up trying other food instead but we always wanted to return to try as we are huge fans of dumplings in all their forms: Japanese Gyoza, Chinese Potstickers, Central European Pierogi, Italian Ravioli

Ever since Bao has opened I have always wanted to visit as I am huge fan of Taiwanese steamed dumplings or “Bao” - Delicate small, white, light dumplings packed with flavourful fillings. With Bao I have been put off over and over again by the queues that regularly wait to get into their small location in Soho (they have other locations that are, evidently, not so busy). Their tiny Soho branch has such a narrow pavement outside the queue is actually on the opposite side…

The thing about Soho and Chinatown in particular is that it is difficult to find somewhere that serves authentic dishes and, not only that, good food as well. There are lots that serve what the British seem to think is Chinese food but to find something truly authentic is difficult. To add insult to injury often there seems to be a separate menu for those that speak Mandarin/Cantonese that does not exist in English

I stumbled across this rather amusingly named sandwich shop while recently walking in the area with an amazing menu so decided to give it a try. “Which Wich Superior Sandwiches” is a large American chain from Texas with this first branch now in London. The food is, of course, sandwiches though with various sides (including fries/chips) but these sandwiches are not your Boots-variety sandwiches, these are packed with ingredients and full of flavour…

L'Escargot bills itself as London's oldest French restaurant having opened in 1927. It is located just south of Soho Square on Greek Street in a Georgian townhouse. I was in London to meet up with some friends so we booked a table for their Sunday lunch set menu (2 courses £35, 3 courses £42). The striking pale green exterior with orange awning sheltering a few tables on the pavement is slightly hard to miss. Stepping inside the front door into a narrow hallway wit…
