Well, we are now in our hotel in Hurghada a resort town on the western banks of the Red Sea in Egypt. I can't say we are too impressed with the town which really is just resorts with little that looks in any way authentic. Going for a walk tonight outside of our hotel,

It is now 10 at night and looking out our cabin window we can see the inky waters of the Nile as we glide through them with the silhouette of palm trees on the shore. It is quiet other than the dull hum of the engines, we cannot even hear the water as it laps the hull just below our window. This is our home for the next seven days and thank goodness for that as it has been another long day of travel, starting quite early

When we woke this morning the boat was moored up on the shore and looking up out of our window we could see tourists looking down at us as they walked along the gangplank passing through our lobby to their own boat tethered on the opposite side. I was kind of wondering if we had missed some outing or something but a short time later we were on our way again.

I have a feeling it is going to be a bit of a painful week of early starts. This morning we were up even before our 5:00 am alarm, sadly. The view out our window is of the black side of a boat moored alongside. No view of the Nile for the time being.

I really do hate early mornings but I think on this trip it is the price you pay for some incredible memories. We got to sleep in today which was nice, getting up at about 7:30 and up to the dining room for breakfast at 8:15. This morning the Germans had a trip to the Nubian village, the trip we did yesterday, so we had the morning free to do what we wanted. We had decided to get off the boat and away from the tourist sites to see a bit of the real Aswan and visit the Souk. Ok, you could argue that the souk can be quite touristy and certainly it was, b…

A relaxing morning following breakfast at a respectable 8 am watching the scenery go by though it was a bit cool despite the sun so we needed to put on long sleeves. Mel had her second full body massage at 10 for an hour at the back of the boat while I did a bit of bird watching with the binoculars.

Another incredible day and a visit to the amazing Valley of the Kings. It started quite early at 5:30 when we got up for breakfast at 6. We met at Ahmed at 7 in the lobby. There are just six of us today including our guide and the driver as one of the other English couples left for the airport this morning. We crossed the Nile over the nearby Luxor Bridge to the west bank.

Another early wake up - 5:30 am. A final look out of our cabin window showed the west bank through the now ever-present smoke haze from the farmers burning their fields. Disappointingly we could also see balloons flying over the area, if we had booked our trip for a few days later (and left for Cairo a few days later!) we could have been onboard.

Introduction

Between November 1 to December 31 of 1979 the “The Treasures of Tutankhamun” exhibition was held at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, Canada. At the time I was in grade 5 and living in nearby Cambridge. I was fascinated by the early Egyptians and, like many others, captivated by the story of Howard Carter discovering the boy kings' tomb relatively intact in the

It is Saturday, June 3rd and I am writing this in our backyard. The sun is out and I have just finished writing up our Egyptian journal.
