Saturday, April 19th, 1997 - Kowloon, Hong Kong

We finally made it. I am in the flat of my friend, Raymond, here in Kowloon, it is fairly early in the morning, as I have not slept that much over the last night.

The rest of the flight yesterday was uneventful, we had another few meals, a few movies then flew into Hong Kong. Unfortunately, it had been raining in Hong Kong yesterday so there were a fair amount of clouds, however, we did get an interesting view of Kowloon as we landed. I had b…

It has been a busy day, we have managed to visit a number of places we were intending to make it to. Unfortunately, it was quite cloudy today so we could not visit Victoria Peak which is on Hong Kong Island to get a bird's eye view of Hong Kong so we visited Tsim Sha Tsui instead.

A different side of the territory was revealed today, in culture, however not in weather. It has been very warm and humid here over the last few days, averaging about 24 Celsius and about 96% humidity, yet no rain. We have had to turn on the air conditioning in Raymond's apartment to cool down the main room, which happens to be where I sleep so I am not complaining. Yet another interesting day in Hong Kong. This visit is proving to be full of surprises.

Mike woke me up at about 11 am this morning, which is probably for the best, even at that, I would have slept longer having not been woken. It seemed to just work out to sleep fairly late, I was up fairly late last night. The unfortunate side effect was that I was over-tired.

Another very full day here in Hong Kong. We finally had the opportunity to see the Science Museum today which was very interesting.

The museum did not open until fairly late so we had the opportunity to have lunch (Dim Sum) and pick up some postcards. It was good that I also had the chance to pick up some stamps and coins from a money changer. A number of people from Winnipeg and my grandmother all requested some of these from here since 1997…

Hong Kong is indeed a city of contrasts and no where have we seen this as much as in our travels today.

To begin with we met Haley and another of her friends (Crystal) at the Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower (on the harbour right behind the Cultural Centre). We then took the Star Ferry to Central and then took another ferry on the way to Lantau Island. We had a very interesting breakfast on the ferry, Mike had instant noodles with various meats in it…

One of the many things we read about before our travels was of the Tin Hau Festival, specifically in reference to a tour that was offered by boat to a Tin Hau festival in the eastern area of Hong Kong. Once we arrived, we were made aware that there are Tin Hau temples all across Hong Kong as they are temples that are dedicated to the God of the Fisherman (Sea), Tin Hau.
