So we went to the trouble of booking a flight later in the day (1 pm!) with the expectation that we would be able to not have to get up so early. Sadly, as we are leaving from Luton Airport, about an hour's coach trip from London where we live, it ended up being an early day for us. It did not help that to even catch the coach we had to first travel about thirty minutes on a local city bus that, and compounded with our desire to be early, meant the alarm went…

The bed in the hotel room is not that great. Not much softer than the floor and the pillows are not much thicker than a newspaper - A daily newspaper not a super-massive weekend one! I managed to, er, borrow the one decorative pillow which is a bit puffier for the night otherwise my back would have been complaining

Well it wasn't raining this morning when we set out but it is not great. Dull and grey pretty much the whole day with the clouds only beginning to thin out towards the evening.

Breakfast was as per yesterday, that is, not really that memorable (except for the wonderful fried pancetta) and quite busy with visitors anxious to head out for the day. The hotel lobby is not quite as busy as yesterday.

It is our last full day in Venice and we wanted to visit an area we have not yet visited, to see as much of the city as we can in the short period of time we are here. We had read there were free shuttles to (but not from!) Murano to visit the glass factories there so when we learned the hotel had a water taxi that every Wednesday at 10 am would take us from the hotel directly to Murano we decided to take them up on it.

Yeah, very sad to be leaving. The flight was at 10:35 so we figured catching the 7:32 boat to the airport was the best. The alarm went off at 6:00 and we struggled to get out of bed, have a shower, change and pack our bags. Have given up complaining about getting up early as what other choice is there? Checking out of the hotel 30 minutes later we settled our room charges (€68 for drinks last night and the tourist room tax).

Venice Journal 2017

I have travelled many places in my life but only one place has really ever caught my imagination: Venice. The man-made floating city in Italy that perpetually strives to hold back the water while preserving the art and beauty of the city itself. There is something magical about a place where the only viable form of transportation is either a boat or walking. No where else in the world is Venice.

We really enjoyed our visit to Venice. I can't wait to return to explore this city that I felt that we only scratched the surface of. Certainly in future we will want to come when it is warmer but I am afraid I know that it will also be a lot busier in the nice weather.
