Review of 'The Golden Compass (Northern Lights)'

The Golden Compass (Northern Lights) by Philip Pullman
1st book in the 'His Dark Materials' series

Lyra is a mischeavious child living in a strange and intriguing world. A world of armored bears, personal daemons and gateways to other dimensions. Magic abounds and is demonstrated throughout the book. I must admit to not being terribly attracted to Lyra but you cannot help but encourage her through the difficult times. One of Rowling's competitors, Pullman fills this novel with exhaustive detail and not exactly childish violence and brutality. I would NOT suggest this to a child fan of Rowling but it is, nonetheless, good fantasy. Well written and a definate page turner.

Rating: “A bit better than average”
