Review of 'Cheshire Game & Country Fair (2024)'

August bank holiday weekend means that the “Cheshire Game & Country Fair” is on and since we found last year's outing so interesting we decided to return again to the Cheshire Showground in Knutsford this year. We purchased tickets in advance but there was no real cost savings to buying on the door though it did mean we did not have to queue for tickets when we arrived. Parking again was in a nearby field, this time to the north of the showground (last year was south).
There is a lot to see here but one of our favourite things is the chainsaw artists fashioning art from massive pieces of timber. This year did not disappoint with a good number of British and foreign artists competing for prizes. As we visited on the first day of the show, the pieces were being created but on the second day (Monday) they are auctioned off. Many of the artists sell their work on-site, with pieces on display in front of their enclosure.
As my wife is a dog groomer and a fan of animals we always have to visit the dog displays where different organizations protecting various breeds have displays and, of course, provide plenty of dogs for petting. This is always interesting and it is shocking to hear how close some breeds are to actual extinction but for the love these groups have for them.

The car and steam field is also a great favourite with small steam tractors being ridden about here and there along with their full-sized cousins in their highly polished glory. There are also classic car displays and some mind-boggling “off road” vehicle displays that still defy understanding. It is amazing to see these mechanical marvels up close and talk to the people that maintain them.
Another thing we like to do is see as many of the races and shows as we can. This year we enjoyed the manic pony races and, a new event for us, “Horse Boarding” where a skate boarder is dragged behind a horse. We also managed to watch some scurry driving as well with younger drivers at the helm.
All of the typical tents selling food and crafts were present and amazing to walk through. Also present was the clay shooting and the dog retrieval displays, the later, of course, we enjoyed greatly, the former we heard throughout our visit!
The weather was cool without the sun, but the rain generally held off for the day we visited. Another good show with lots to see spread out over a huge area. It was nice there were a few changes from last year to keep it interesting but generally it was what we have seen before - Though this is not necessarily a bad thing.
