Review of 'Tonkichi Tonkatsu'

cimg6442.jpg A wonderfully authentic Tonkatsu Japanese restaurant located on the 4th floor of the World Trade Center in Causeway Bay. When we visited for lunch we were taken along the length of the restaurant to the room overlooking the harbour (and the noon-day gun across Gloucester Road immediately outside). We were seated in a booth beside the window.

This was not a cheap meal. The menu is very colourful with great pictures of each dish on offer along with descriptions.

My companion had the chicken katsu curry while I had the pork and prawn katsu with mayonnaise dip. Each of our dishes came with a cabbage salad, miso soup, and rice. I was delighted that we were given a bowl with a rough interior that is used for grinding the provided sesame seeds and to which you add the designated thick, sweet, black sauce. Into this you dip your pieces of katsu - Heavenly. My prawns were enormous, tender, fresh and tasty. The pork was moist and tasty as well.

The service was polite and helpfully explained how to actually eat the meal. The sushi and sashimi ordered by others looked worth a try though very expensive…

At $539 this was not cheap but it was a very tasty and elegant meal. There were a number of diners here from the World Trade Center in suits and obviously on expenses.

If you are looking for genuine Tonkatsu, this is the place for you.
