Review of 'CW2 Burger by Local Burger'
As with every year I try to pick a new restaurant for my birthday dinner. As we were in Crewe we started walking along Nantwich Road to see what we could find and, generally, we were quite disappointed but then we stumbled across “CW2 Burger” with it's contemporary, clean interior that really stands out from the local competition. It was worth a shot.
When entering, the small restaurant has a busy kitchen and order point in front of you with about 10 wooden tables (and a clean toilet). They do a huge business in takeaway but we were asked to take a seat then place our order at the till for delivery to our table.
They have three locations: Here in Crewe, another in Sandbach (CW11 Burger) and the final one in Nantwich (CW5 Burger - though currently closed for renovation which explains why we did not know of it despite living there). The small menu booklet serves all locations and is divided into Burgers with an assortment of sauces and toppings as well as a “Burger of the Month” (£11.50, this month is a “pizza burger”), Sides, Children Meals, Desserts (Milkshakes, Giant Cookies, Tea & Coffee, and Bubble Waffles), and Drinks (softs, wines, spirits and beers). Despite this, there are not a huge number of choices but what they do have are indulgent and sound delicious.
After placing our order, I had a look at the grill, clearly visible from the payment area, to see their cooking of burgers - Both “smash” (squished flat patties) and normal.
I had the “Chicago Smash” - “3x80g 100% Beef patties, 3x American cheese, American mustard, gem lettuce, pickles, ketchup, fried onion” (£12.50) with a side of “Cheese & Jalapeno Fries” - “Our homemade cheese sauce & jalapeno” (£3.70). The burger was absolutely delicious - amazingly juicy and very meaty with a good amount of cheese and a delicious brioche-style bun. The toppings were not too overwhelming and it was nice to see both ketchup and mustard on a burger which seems to be missing in many UK burger joints. Nicely, despite the size it was not to messy to eat with just a few fried onion pieces left to show for it. The fries were delicious, not grainy at all, with a nice crunch and a good amount of topping throughout - they took the time to coat most of the chips.
My companion had the “Double Trouble” - “Double 100% beef patties, caramelised mozzarella, cheese sauce, smoked bacon, house sauce, gem lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles” (£14) along with “Sweet Potato Fries” (£3.70). The burger was delicious but very difficult to eat so she had to cut it in half but still managed to finish it. The meat was very juicy and, again, very meaty (sounds like an odd thing to say but many burgers you simply can't really taste the beef, in these cases the flavour really cam through). The sweet potato fries were delicious - unsalted, crunchy and not too sweet showing that they were using perfectly (not too) ripe sweet potatoes.
For our drinks we had their “Vanilla Milkshake” (£4.50) which was nice but as with many milkshakes in this country, a bit too thin for our liking. Interestingly, they were topped with a bit of whipped cream making them a bit richer.
At just less than £43 for the two of us, it is a bit pricey for a burger dinner but the quality was really good as was the flavour. The food was not too greasy and the ingredients were top notch. It was prepared with care and presented nicely on the plate. The amazingly relaxed staff (despite lots of talking and raised voices in the back) were very friendly and seemed genuinely interested in hearing what we thought of their food.
Looking for a great burger in Crewe? You can do no better than “CW2 Burger”.
