Review of 'Frydays of Kendal'

Before visiting the Lake District I had been reading an article that details the top ten Fish & Chips restaurants in England and, what do you know, several of them were actually located in the Lake District so when we finally got there we decided to give one of them a try: Frydays of Kendal. Kendal itself is a small town on the river Kent with not a lot of parking and a lot of tourists so getting to Frydays' small shop is a bit tricky as it is also on a rather busy road along the river but it is worth the effort.

Despite having arrived just after opening on a Saturday there was already a queue for ordering bearing witness to it's popularity. The takeaway is quite small but very modern and spotless complete with computer animated menus on the wall (cute fish…obviously unaware of their future…floating in amongst the menu choices). There is very little seating in the shop with only four bar stools in the corner with a narrow counter on the far wall. The menu is what you might expect from a typical takeaway with not only the fish and chips options but also with burgers, pies and other deep-fried treats. But, of course, we were here for the fish and chips so we picked the “large fish & chips” (£10.70; the same as the “fish & chips” option, at £6.40, but with two pieces of fish). There is no choice of fish: It is cod.

Fish & Chips

A few minutes after ordering from the friendly counter staff we were called back for our dinner. Simply amazing. Served in two large takeaway boxes, one for the fish, and one for the chips it was an enormous portion. The fish was flaky and the coating extremely light. Mysteriously, none of it was very greasy. The chips were very good quality chips as you would find at any chippy but delicious nonetheless.

Worth seeking out if you are in the area for excellent fish and chips doubtless deserving of their numerous awards. Top quality both in the food but also in the restaurant itself…though no dining facilities, takeaway only!
