Review of 'FiftySeven'
I am not sure it is entirely fair to review “FiftySeven” as we only had a single dish between us, but, I can certainly share with you what it was like…but can't speak too much for any other food other than to say there is a good selection.
Once again we were in search of a restaurant along the seafront in St Peter Port but I had done a bit of research and found that “FiftySeven” was one of the best places for seafood in the area so decided to give it a go though made sure to book a table as it was a Friday night. As it turns out, the place was empty when we visited just after it opened at 6 pm. A few people did end up coming in before we left but it was quite quiet throughout…perhaps because it was off-season? In any case, the food did not disappoint.
The ground floor appears to be set aside for drinking so we were shown to the top floor with a table near the entrance. The modern interior is fairly inviting but I can imagine with the hard furnishings it might get a bit noisy when busy. The staff did not appear to be overly friendly but did chat about recent travels…
The simple, one sided menu is divided into “Starters”, “Main” which is sub-divided into “Vegetarian”, “Meat”, “Grill”, and “Fish/Seafood” along with “Sauces” and “Sides”. The prices are reasonable if slightly on the pricy side, particularly the seafood bits which seemed to generally feature local produce. On the small, separate “Daily Specials” menu we opted for the “Mediterranean Moules Marinere” (£10 as starter, £20 as main; served with bread for the starter or “French Fries” for the main), selecting the main portion size with bread to soak up the juices (I passed on the octopus as I had that the previous day…).
I am sure we did not impress the staff but honestly, we just looking for some good, simple seafood which is what was delivered a short while later - A heaping bowl of tasty mussels along with lovely homemade bread. The mussels were perfectly cooked and very tender with not too many “closed” (dead, inedible). The sauce was a light flavour but enough to bring a good sense of depth to the dish though there was a lot of it, with a good sized puddle left in our bowls when we had finished.
It would be good to return to the restaurant to try some of their other dishes as I like what they did with the simplicity of our mussels - Basically let the seafood speak for itself and not overdo it. The staff, though not overly friendly, were certainly polite and were very helpful.
