Review of 'Time Out Market Lisboa'

20260330_172725.jpg Located immediately adjacent to the Lisbon Market, Time Out Market Lisbon (Lisboa) is the same as in other cities - A huge hall with a range of local street food vendors in a lively, buzzy atmosphere. You order what you like from any of the stalls, they give you a buzzer, and you return when it buzzes for your food. The variety of food on offer here seems to not as diverse as other locations but the food is excellent. Seating consists of long, high wooden tables that you share with fellow diners. Here there is even a small shop selling food-based items such as menus and cookware.

Interior

We visited on a busy early Monday evening and it was tricky to find somewhere to sit. We took turns having a look around while the other saved our seats, ordering separately.

I started with a visit to “Monte Mar” for seafood, opting for the “Camarão com lulas” (shrimp with squids, served with rice; €14.50) which took quite some time to arrive but was absolutely delicious. The squid was deliciously tender and the shrimps (prawns) were served in their shells but wonderfully fresh. I also added a side of quite nice olives, though still slightly salty (€4).

Croquettes from Croqueteria

I had to try some of the croquettes that we had seen when walking through the city earlier in the day so I visited a stall that specializes in them “Croqueteria”, deferring to the server as to what might be the best to try. He suggested the traditional (€1.95 each), “Alheira de Caça & Grelos” (“game sausage and turnip greens”; €1.95 each), “Presunto Pata Negra” (“Pata Negra Ham”; €2.40 each), and “Cozido à Portuguesa” (“Portuguese Stew”; €1.95 each). All of which were absolutely delicious, and VERY rich. I particularly enjoyed the Cozido which was a much more full, deep, flavour.

Bacalhau com Purés

My companion visited “Miguel Castro E Silva” for their “Bacalhau com Purés” (Cod with Sweet Potato & Spinach Purées, Egg on Top) which she found to be very delicious. The fish was very light, not at all “fishy”, the mash sweet and creamy. Quite satisfying.

We both opted for some gelato from “Santini” which you pay for scoop by expensive scoop. They had some interesting flavours as well but the ice cream was first rate. We had it in the park across the road as the sun set…

Entering the Market

The items in the market are not particularly cheap but they are very well prepared, fresh and generally very delicious. The stallholders all seem to speak English and the menus are quite small and simple to understand. A way to approach it is to pick a few items from different stalls to take in all the flavours…Try something you perhaps have never had before, skip over the burgers and pizzas.

Rating: “Nearly perfect, but not quite”
