Review of 'The Galleon Fish and Chips'

In Conwy there is one restaurant that most visitors cannot help but notice if not actually visit, it is the always busy “The Galleon Fish and Chips” restaurant on the High Street one street away from passing through the city walls onto “Lower Gate Street” along the waterfront. It is well know for the being the best fish and chips restaurant in the city.

The order counter is on the ground floor just off the street with a small seating area next door while upstairs there are two more rooms of tables (and the toilet). All tables have the common condiments of malt vinegar and salt. If dining in, during the tourist season there is table service but outside of that you place your order at the counter and your order number will be called out when ready. The small menu features all of the standard fish and chips items at very reasonable cost.

We opted for the “Fish” (£6.75), yes, literally that is what was on the menu (it turned out to be two small deep fried fillets of halibut) and “Regular Chips” (£3.10) as well as two soft drink tins (£1.95 each). Taking our seat upstairs it was not long before our order number was called. The fish was slightly greasy but very fresh with the perfect amount of batter not overwhelming the dense, tender flesh of the fish while the chips were delicious - Slightly sweet and a very smooth, creamy texture. My companion found that her fish and chips were undercooked for her liking but I had no problems. Yes, the chips could have been cooked a bit longer as they were not at all crunchy.

At just over £20 for the two of us (sharing the chips) it was definitely a bargain. It was certainly quite tasty but as to the best fish and chips we have ever had? No, not really, but it was very good, delivering on flavour and quality if not quite the right level of cooking and texture.

The restaurant features great views of Castle Conwy down the street.
