Lancashire
Introduction
Lancashire is generally flat with a maze of small roads between massive motorways linking several large cities: Blackpool, Liverpool and Manchester. It is also the main route between the north (Scotland) and south of Britain.
Morecambe
Often overlooked and derided for it's perceived old-fashioned nature, Morecambe is actually a pleasant sea-side town that has in recent years been gentrified and now offers much for the whole family.
Be sure to visit the wonderful tribute to Morecambe's son: Eric Morecambe who used this stage name in tribute to the town.
The old train station is now used for shopping and restaurants.
Just walking along the promenade is well worth it, with wide paths and wonderful views of the Bay. Note that it is possible to get a guide to take you across the bay (at low tide) but do NOT attempt to walk across on your own.
The Midland is a 90 year old art-deco icon of the town at the start of the “Stone Jetty”, opposite the old train station. In addition to being a hotel there is also a restaurant and bar catering to the general public (the fish and chips are OK).
If you are interested in an excellent old-school, pile-them-high-on-the-floor, book store, then I can really recommend The Old Pier Bookshop (287 Marine Road Central, Morecambe, Lancashire, LA4 5BY). Definitely worth a browse.
