Review of 'The Platform 2 (El hoyo 2)'
Set in the same world as The Platform, this story from the vertical prison where daily a platform lowers bearing food. Young woman Perempuán (Milena Smit) finds herself sharing a level with Zamiatin (Hovik Keuchkerian), a large man, who explains that two factions currently control the tower: The Loyalists, lead by the brutal Dagin Babi (Óscar Jaenada), who have imposed rules established by a mythic “Messiah” that prisoners on each level should only eat the food item they requested on admission to the prison or face retribution. This order is threatened by a second group of “barbarians” who ignore these rules completely but are punished for it by a group of Loyalist enforcers. When Perempuán violates the rules by taking it upon herself to punish a group of barbarians, Babi descends with his supporters to punish her…
Another brutal “Platform” story that takes an unusual concept to extremes with horrific implications. There is some brutal visceral violence here that, somehow, is compelling to take in (certainly the way they remove the arms of rule offenders is not shied away from) along with the often equally visceral consumption of the food. The story is not terribly moved forward from the original film though the self-imposed rules by the prisoners makes it a bit interesting. Perempuán is our way into this society of the Platform and also ends up being the one who completely threatens it with intriguing results.
Violent but very interesting. If you liked the first film (which you should really watch before you see this second instalment lest you be completely lost) you will like this sequel which offers some interesting insights into the brutal prison of the Platform.
