Review of 'Kum Koon Garden'

A personal favourite

A favourite haunt for dim sum it has been a few years since I have visited for dinner but the dim sum is probably the most varied in the city but not the best prepared. Service is a bit lack-luster but it is nice to see the trolleys come around (much better than having to select from a list of dishes…do the other restaurant's not realize that people want to see what they are buying before they buy it? I am also sure that the trolley method also sells a lot more food…). Price is reasonable though the surroundings resemble eating in an aircraft hanger, ok, a RED aircraft hanger.

The dishes on the trolleys tend to be fairly standard dim sum fayre but you can order other items which will be cooked on demand and brought to the table. For dim sum they use the standard piece of paper divided into various prices to keep track of your bill which you then present at the cashier on the way out to pay. Note that parking is in the “pay and display” parking lot immediately beside the restaurant which will reimburse you if you present your parking slip when settling up your bill.

Lots of Dim Sum Deep Fried Prawns with Mayonnaise Curried Baby Octopus Curried Tripe

In recent years the quality of Kum Koon has greatly improved with the Dim Sum pretty much the best in the city. Recent renovations have also greatly expanded the restaurant and greatly improved the interior which is still large but much more comfortable. The restaurant is obviously set up for large parties and receptions with the ability for them to divide up the space much like a convention centre.

Interior Tables Diners

Returning to visit in October 2022 I was surprised to see at a Friday lunch still how popular the restaurant is. The large space was half full and trolleys were being rolled out to appreciative clients who lingered over their meals. Though, to be sure, visiting on weekends is much better as there are more choices on offer (such as one of my favourites, deep-fried tarot root dumplings).

Service is a bit abrupt, but adequate with the food tasting quite good and prices reasonable. Well worth a visit if you are in the city.
