Review of 'Thai by Thai'

A personal favourite

Having been somewhat impressed by Death by Tacos in Chester at the Chester Indoor Market I once again found myself roaming the room for another taste of excellent street food and I definitely found that in “Thai by Thai”, located near the butchers near the entrance from the mall. The menus are all written out on the walls offering a great selection of what looks to me to be authentic Thai food (the operators are from Thailand) at reasonable prices. With the number of people coming and going and with a waiting room in another unit next door these are good indicators the food is good. It looks to be the busiest stall in the market.

Eshewing my normal “first visit” meal of Pad Thai (a personal favourite and, I feel, a good way to see how good the cooking really is) I decided to go for another firm favourite which I seldom see on menus: “Penang Curry” (£8 to £9.50 depending on selected meat) while my companion, having shockingly never tried it, ordered the “Tom Yum Soup” (£5.50 chicken/£6.00 prawn). We accompanied this by a side order of another staple: Duck Spring Rolls (£4.50). Everything is cooked to order so after ordering we were told we would have to wait about 20 minutes for our food so we passed the time by watching the happy punters coming and going as well as the staff busily cooking away in the tiny kitchen at the back of the stall behind the plexiglass. About 15 minutes later our number was called and we made our way to the central seating area to enjoy.

My pork Penang Curry was absolutely perfect, yes, a bit spicy but a full and rich broth really filled out the dish. My companion was also extremely pleased with her prawn “Tom Yum Soup”. A big fan of the Chinese “Hot and Sour” soup I think I have made a convert over to the much more complex and delicious Thai “Tom Yum”. The spring rolls were quite good as well - Not at all greasy and absolutely crammed with duck and a delicious dip as well.

Sure, it is definitely not fancy but the food at “Thai by Thai” is absolutely delicious and extremely reasonably priced. Often busy, be prepared for a wait.
