Senegal

Introduction

Senegal is a large country on the west coast of Africa just south of the Sahara desert. It is a very dry country yet with a wealth of culture and places to explore.

Senegal is effectively divided into two parts with the vast proportion of the territory to the north of The Gambia and the Casamance area to the south of The Gambia. It should be noted that the Casamance area has in recent years been the site of a rebel uprising against the Senegalese government so travel to this area is not recommended.

Language and Culture

The official language in Senegal is french though a large number of people also speak Wolof. The Wolof culture pervades the population with a great variety of patterned cloth, music and dance.

Formerly a french colony, Senegalese culture has been influenced by a number of aspects of french culture including it's food.

Currency

The currency in use in Senegal is the West African CFA (commonly pronounced “Say-Fah”). There are a number of different banks in Senegal and many have bank machines in Dakar though outside of Dakar do not count on it.
