Review of 'Saigon Saigon'

Have walked by enough times we thought we would give this one a try! Saigon Saigon is enormous with many seats in it's dark and somewhat crowded interior though it does also do a big business in delivery/take away. Always busy with families, and quite noisy it is definitely worth a visit for those that like Vietnamese food.

Warmly welcomed, we were shown to our table and given a copy of the impressive, if somewhat overwhelming, menu. Dishes are all very well described and range from noodles – both friend and in soup – to standard sharable dishes (like Chinese).

We started with some lovely fresh lime juice that was lightly spiced (£2.85) - delicious. Our starters were prawn crackers (£1.95) - not greasy, crunchy and served with a wonderful dipping sauce - and vegetarian spring rolls (£5.50) - a bit tasteless but with a good dipping sauce as well.

My main was tamarind spiced king prawn (£10.50) which I found very spicy so much so that I could not taste the prawns or any of the vegetables it was cooked with. The prawns themselves, from what I could tell, were reasonably tasty and the sauce was quite good. My companions had chicken curry (£7.50) - tasty with a wonderfully creamy sauce - and roasted duck with five spices (£9.95) - good if a bit bland. All of this was served with a couple of orders of rice (£2.50) which was essential for this type of cooking. There were many other dishes that looked quite good (thinking of the noodle dishes and squid starters enjoyed by other tables while we were there).

The portion sizes were such that we avoided dessert…

All in all, the service was very pleasant, the environment was quite welcoming, the price was reasonable and the food not bad at all. We will be back to try other items on the menu, particularly since it is just down the road…
