Review of 'Belgo Centraal (NOW CLOSED)'

Quite a trendy Belgium “moulles frites” (mussels and chips) place just north of Covent Garden. Entering off of the street into the old warehouse you are taken into the basement via an old service lift. The basement is in the undercroft with arches over the tables located at either end of the large, open, kitchen. The interior is all dark colours and metal. All staff are dressed in what is a modern take on monk clothing…

The food is not bad at all though quite simple as, after all, this is a Belgium restaurant. The prices are quite good, particularly the specials (we took the “beat the clock” special where you pay the price that is reflected in the time they take your order). The “moulees frites” are wonderfully fresh and very tasty (they offer many different “styles” of “moulees frites” including, bizarrely, Thai curry…) served in a very generous portion. The fries were OK if not incredible and the mayonnaise was lacklustre – I have to say that I expected more though. My dinner companion's roast chicken (another special they offer) was cold and not entirely tasty (the mushroom sauce overwhelmed the subtle flavour of the chicken). It could have been that the temperature was because of the fact we were paying so little (as it was on special) so they could have pre-prepared this (it came so quickly, this seems likely) – We will have to come again to try it when the restaurant is busier when, hopefully, it will be fresh and warmer.

Deserts were quite good and we both went for the waffles with ice cream (myself with the dark chocolate, my companion with the white) which were very good indeed (thankfully, Belgium waffles after all!).

Enjoyable and certainly a place I will be back again.
