Review of 'Porters English Restaurant (NOW CLOSED)'

Having tickets for a show we found a good price on a pre-theatre menu here at Porters. We had heard it served quite good English food (a rarity, believe it or not, in this tourist-saturated area of the city) so decided to give it a try.

The two courses for £7 sounded great and started so wonderfully with a delightful “The London Particular” - Deliciously tasty pea soup served with fresh bread (and butter). Rich, deep flavour made this amazing. Unfortunately, both of our mains did not continue the trend…I had the “Steak and Kidney Pudding” which was covered with tasteless gravy but even the pudding did not have the deep, rich, flavour I expected. Things were not helped with my mistaken choice of potato: Mashed with wholegrain mustard which was so VERY strong it overwhelmed anything you might have wanted to have with it. My companion's choice of beer-battered fish and chips glistened and she demonstrated how applying a bit of pressure with her fork the oil came oozing out. Having said that, she did say the fish was very fresh and tasty.

The interior is quite fun with old pictures of Covent Garden throughout and a dark ambiance that makes it feel quite cozy. The staff were friendly and very helpful (quickly resolving a problem with the bill at the end of our meal) - Though perhaps they could have advised me against my mustard mash…

Disappointing. I am not sure we will be back to give the normal menu a try…
