Review of 'Creams Cafe'
Creams is one of the few ice cream parlours around London that offer not only ice cream (gelato and sorbet) but also cakes, waffles, sundaes, milkshakes and smoothies. The location on King Street opposite Kings Mall always has a few customers and is open late.
Our latest visit to Creams was on a Friday night after a show at the Lyric when we were looking for something sweet to satisfying our craving. There are several tables on the pavement outside though it was too cool for that so we decided to sit inside. In the door on the right is the ice cream cooler with many flavours on offer. As you walk to the back you pass by a small cake cooler. The main seating area at the rear of the restaurant (wait to be seated) consists of a number of cozy booths that are generally kept quite clean.
The “Creams Cafe” menu is standard across their many locations in London and England but full of vibrant pictures. Prices seem a bit steep but portion sizes are very generous. We decided to go for a couple of sundaes so placed our orders with the friendly waitress and waited a short time for them to prepare our orders.
My choice was the “Creams Knickerbocker Glory” (“Our take on the classic – Chocolate Chip Gelato, Strawberry Gelato with mango slices, fresh banana slices, fresh strawberries, topped with loads of Creams soft vanilla ice cream, strawberry sauce and a Creams wafer”; £7.45) which was piled high in a tall glass sundae dish with ice cream and toppings literally falling everywhere. I had to be quick to stem the various leaks but it was very good with a lot of fruit but a bit too heavy on the chocolate (ok, “chocolate chip gelato”) ice cream for my taste and it only had a single lonely piece of mango.
My companion had her usual, the “Totally Minted” (“Mint Chocolate Chip Gelato and Chocolate Chip Gelato with Creams soft vanilla ice cream, lathered in milk chocolate sauce, milk chocolate shavings, After Eight and a Creams wafer.”, £6.95) which, by all accounts, was quite good indeed though a bit too much chocolate and soft server with not enough mint ice cream. She also complained about the fact that it was quite large…though I note she still managed to finish it all.
At £14.40 for two it is certainly more than you would pay for ice cream cones but it is quite a good bargain considering what you get. The service was friendly with a very relaxed feel to the place - They were not bothered for us to sit and chat. We will be back.
