Review of 'Medz Corner Food Court'
A personal favourite
After more than 10 years of living in London I am still amazed at how I can be surprised at what I stumble on. Case in point, we are in town on a Sunday for a show in Hammersmith. Looking for something to eat in Kensington after being dismayed to discover the food court on the first floor of Whole Foods has closed down we spotted a sign across the street “Food Court” so waited 10 minutes for the lights to change and eventually wandered in and were delighted at what we found.
Though not large by any means Medz Corner (food court) consists of nine street food vendors from pizza to Thai to sushi to Shawarma all under one roof. The clean, narrow industrial space has a long bar and pizza place on the left with food vendor stalls on the right and at the back. Early on a hot Sunday afternoon the place was not very busy but quite warm…
You find a place to sit, order your food and are given a buzzer that goes off when your food is ready. Variations on a theme.
After wandering around looking at the menus and being disappointed the sushi place was temporarily closed (he was waiting for his oil to come back to temperature, evidently) I eventually settled on Duck Frites where I ordered their signature dish (wait for it): Duck Fat Chips with Raclette (£13). My arteries hardening just looking at it on the menu, I was intrigued at something completely off-the-wall and unusual. I just had to give it a try.
Yes, it was just as amazing as it sounds though despite the richness of all of the ingredients I had to have a flavour added in the form of some home-made yoghurt dip (nicely creamy and full of herbs) and some hoisin sauce (very zingy indeed). We struck up a conversation with the stall holder who liked my hat…anyway, he encouraged the sauces to cut through the heavy meal and he was right. It was absolutely necessary. The duck was beautiful and tender, the large chips crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, in other words, perfect, and the cheese plentiful and very, very rich. Despite the fairly small bowl that filled me up quite nicely.
My companion took a bit of a diversion and tried “Mr. Shawarma”, ordering a dish consisting of deep fried chicken with cream sauce on top of fries and a small salad which she absolutely adored. Yeah, it was very tasty.
Prices are reasonable, certainly better than your average takeaway. Good choices with lots of tables kept quite clean. Well worth a visit.
