Moraira
The sleepy, rather up-market seaside town of Moraira has a lot going for it…mostly because it is sleepy and by the sea…It is also home to a number of ex-pats from the UK and elsewhere with their large houses in the surrounding hills so property prices can be a bit expensive.
What to See
Er, not a lot. The beach is nice and the castle on the ocean is quite pretty. Here it is pretty much enjoy the food, drink, sea and weather.
The largest beach is “Playa de l'Ampolla” which tends to get quite busy particularly with families.
A short distance south along the ocean is “Cala L'Andragó” which has some rather nice restaurants and a small, rock pool swimming area. Much less crowded than in Moraira itself.
Where to Eat
There are a few good places to eat in town but there are a lot of tourist ones that are not really worth a look in. A few specific recommendations:
- Bar Costa Blanca (Calle del Dr. Calatayud, 20, 03724; mid way down Calle del Dr. Calatayud) - No frills, really local inexpensive tapas place.
- Restaurante Del Pescador (03724 Moraira; on the waterfront near the marina) - Offer a tremendous lunch time special and serve great Spanish seafood dishes (great paella).
Where to Stay
When I visited I stayed at the inexpensive “Hotel Buigues” (Calle del Dr. Calatayud, 24, 03724) which is run by local people who are very friendly. Rooms are basic but clean and breakfast is provided in a lovely courtyard.
Getting Around
To be honest it is easy enough to walk around as you can cross the entire city centre in a matter of minutes. For further travel there are local buses that operate…occasionally but there is also street parking throughout the town though with a large free car park just outside the town centre (look for the signs as you enter the town) though make sure you are not parked there on a Friday as this is when (and where) the market is held.
There is a “Tren Turístic Moraira” (tourist land train) that operates all along the coast with departures every 30 minutes in the morning and afternoon.
