Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, just off the A539, in the town of Trevor (just a few miles east of Llangollen) is a masterpiece of 18th century engineering. Spanning a height of 157 feet from the valley below this narrow aqueduct allows boats on the Llangollen Canal to cross the valley of the river Dee. It is the highest canal aqueduct in the world and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Crossing the Aqueduct

There are several paid parking sites that charge a flat rate (£3.50 at time of visiting) but there is free parking in Trevor if you are willing to walk an extra five minutes to the site. There is a small museum and shop on site as well as a number of tour companies operating boats to take you over the aqueduct (you can also rent canoes and the like should you wish to do this under your own power).

Boat Crossing You can walk along the narrow walkway beside the canal over the bridge which offers stunning views of the surrounding area. There are also numerous paths under the aqueduct.
